Real Working Pottery
I offer wheel throwing taster sessions for a maximum of two people at a time, taught in my pottery in Gosport.
Working with clay is engaging, absorbing and surprisingly calming, and there’s real satisfaction in creating something with your own hands. Whether you’re completely new to pottery or simply curious to try the wheel for yourself, because I only take two people at a time, you’ll have plenty of time at the wheel and lots of guidance.
I’m a traditionally trained, working potter making small-batch functional ware, and sharing the enjoyment of working with clay is an important part of what I do. Your first pot starts here
If you’ve ever fancied having a go at the potter’s wheel, my wheel throwing taster sessions are a great place to start. No experience is needed and by the end of the session you’ll have thrown your first pot.
The sessions are relaxed, informal and kept deliberately small, giving you plenty of time at the wheel and all the guidance you need along the way.

Becoming a potter was a later life change of direction for me, a second career after more than thirty years in graphic design. I have known Derek for a while but recently went to a workshop where he was one of the tutors and it turns out I didn’t know him. I’ve known the warm gentle, bloke with a brilliant sense of humour, I didn’t know he was such a wonderful teacher. His quiet, straightforward manner, clear instructions and hands on demonstrations made the three day course a real pleasure as well as a learning experience. I will definitely look to attending more of his courses.
Derek’s guidance during the classes I attended was brilliant. A nice balance between helping you achieve the projects you’re working on while teaching you techniques that will make the difference.
Directions
The pottery is accessed via a pedestrian footpath off of Mill Pond Road, Gosport (please note vehicles are not allowed on this path).
There is free parking in Mill Lane and Mill Pond Road. Entering Mill Pond Road from Mill Lane you will find the footpath on the right (approximately 100 yards/metres in from Mill Lane). Walk along the path to the double gates at the far end, this is the entrance to Potts Pottery, please knock or use the bell pull to announce your arrival.
If it helps, you can use “Mill Pond Road PO12 4QL” on SatNav to find the start of the footpath.
